Its a complex thing, and yet difficult to understand like the chicken and egg analogy, you'll get confused and might drop it. Cant be defined by cupid, pigeon or whatever that seems look alike.
There is love for family, friends, and at first sight is true love as far as i know. If you think there is more ?, speak it up :)
The things that gets me about it, which is between a man and a woman. Its required to make a relationship and perceived as being encompassing, and able to last against all odds.
OK I'll make it simple, Its an important factor that makes any relationship work.

But I think what most people perceive as a simply passion, and nothing wrong about it. Depends on how bith person react on it. Because its always be Verbs there is means you must work, act, and do something for it.
For me ? its an entity for encompasses everything in a successful long lasting relationship. Which is trust, friendship, and passion. Once the passion has died there needs to be something to fall back on to make a it work. It last forever for me, and stand all the tempests.
Well... now talk about "What is the meaning?", as far as i know, its what we experience in any moment with someone without having or believing any judgments about that person (good, bad, pretty, ugly, fat, slim, black, white, orc, zombie, dwarf and anything that you name it :p).
Other words, Its about accept the person perfectly, no matters how.

3 things that I know about it, as usual speak up if you think there is more.
Acceptance
Allowed someone to be themselves, without any belief that they aren’t good enough, or that they would be “better” if they were different. If you read my previous stuff "PMS" you'll understand, perfect human doesn't smoke, drunk, lie, clumsy and exist.
Completely unconditional
Doesn’t look like credit card or discount at the Malls with bunch of Terms & Condition trap. When we truly love someone, we can’t stop it, regardless of what they do or say.
If it dependent upon the other acting and speaking like we wanted, then its completely conditional. We often confuse this, or maybe it just positive thoughts about someone to make them better.
Just loving what a person says or does, not loving them. Positive thoughts or the thought “I love you” isn’t necessary to it. Sometimes it even gets in the way.
Selfless
Doesn’t ask or want anything in return, because there is nothing it needs. We just do for the sake of it. When we do that, we don’t look for them to fill our needs or even accept it, and all those types of things.
If that is what we are looking for, then we are just using the other one. What is the meaning? it completely selfless.
You don't love someone for their looks, clothes, or fancy car, but because they sing a song that only you can hear"
